1 CONT News of Tyson Joseph Whittington's death spread rapidly Wednesday, as form
1 CONC er classmates, teammates, coaches and teachers reached out to each other a

1 CONT A 2001 graduate of Cary High, Whittington was an All-Conference quarterba
1 CONC ck last fall, as well as the Tri-Eight 4A Co-Offensive Player of the Yea
1 CONC r. Whittington also played on Cary High's varsity basketball team.

1 CONT Friends and family said Whittington had gone to Greenville to visit frien
1 CONC ds at East Carolina University. Tuesday afternoon, he was driving back alo
1 CONC ne when he apparently lost control of his Honda Passport.
1 CONT
1 CONT At 12:31 p.m. Tuesday, Whittington was driving west on U.S. 264 north of S
1 CONC ims when his vehicle ran off the road, a dispatcher with the state Highw
1 CONC ay Patrol said. Whittington's Passport rolled several times and skidd
1 CONC ed to a stop in the median, the dispatcher said. Whittington was tak
1 CONC en to a nearby hospital in Wilson, where he later died.

1 CONT Whittington's former basketball coach at Cary High, Allan Gustafson Jr., s
1 CONC aid his phone started ringing about 10 p.m. Tuesday. Several of Whittingto
1 CONC n's former teammates, including some who had graduated a year ahead of hi
1 CONC m, came over to the coach's house to talk late into the night.

1 CONT "Word spread so fast," Gustafson said. "It's really generated an outpouri
1 CONC ng of love from those who knew him. ... We had nine seniors last yea
1 CONC r, so it really was a close-knit team."

1 CONT As many as 150 well-wishers, many of them former classmates, came by the W
1 CONC hittington family's home to offer their condolences Wednesday, his fami
1 CONC ly said.

1 CONT Whittington didn't just socialize with jocks, his friends said. He had fri
1 CONC ends from one end of the high school to the other.

1 CONT "You could name every clique, and he belonged to it," said Andrew Donova
1 CONC n, a basketball teammate and friend who drove Whittington home from practi
1 CONC ce for three years. "Everybody liked Tyson. Everybody had an affiliation w
1 CONC ith him."

1 CONT Donovan said Whittington was a generous friend who often treated his frien
1 CONC ds to pizza or a night at the movies.

1 CONT Tall and lanky, Whittington used to crack up his friends by flexing his mu
1 CONC scles. During the warm-ups before every basketball game, Whittington wou
1 CONC ld hike up his shorts, yank his socks up high and wear a headband to light

1 CONT "He could always make you laugh if you were having a bad day," said Marc

1 CONT The section of Owen county known as Jennings township was organized as a d
1 CONC istrict division in the year 1842 and originally formed a part of the town
1 CONC ship of Jackson. It lies in the northern part of the county and its bounda
1 CONC ries are: Putnam county on the north, Taylor township on the east, Montgom
1 CONC ery and Morgan twps on the south and finally Jackson township on the wes
1 CONC t. The township was named after T.C. Jennings, a man who took an active pa
1 CONC rt in its organization. The original outline has been modified at differe
1 CONC nt times. In 1852, its boundaries were enlarged by the addition of a pa
1 CONC rt of Morgan township and in September of 1861 it was readjusted to its pr
1 CONC esent twenty one square miles. The surface of the township except for t
1 CONC he northeastern part is hilly and broken and has much wild scenery.

1 CONT The most broken portions are along the Eel River and in the central and so
1 CONC uthern portions where the soil rests upon a bed of sandstone. Building sto
1 CONC ne of fine quality is found upon almost any farm in the township. An inexh
1 CONC austible supply of block coal underlies the township and is easily accessi
1 CONC ble. Several mines have been developed for neighborhood purposes, the larg
1 CONC est being on the farm of James Beaman. The principal occupation is stockra
1 CONC ising.

1 CONT The first land entry made in Jennings township was in the year 18
1 CONC 16 by C & F Bullett who were speculators and obtained patents for 611 acr
1 CONC es in the township. The same year entries were made by I. Lindsey and Fett
1 CONC er and Hughes in section 36. The first permanent settler appears to have b
1 CONC een Isaac Teel who located near the lower falls of the Eel River and erect
1 CONC ed a small mill as early as 1820. One year later he entered land in secti
1 CONC on 26 and died a short time after this. His widow later married a man nam
1 CONC ed Acres, another early settlers in the same area.

1 CONT Settlements were made in the northern part of the township in an early d
1 CONC ay by William and Owen Martin, the latter becoming one of the leading citi
1 CONC zens of the community. Pioneers came in rather slowly due to the broken co
1 CONC nditions, the country provided little inducements.

1 CONT In 1833, entries were made by William Goff and Amasa Tabor, the latter a n
1 CONC ative of Kentucky and a prominent member of the Baptist Church. Later ca
1 CONC me John Black, Matthew Spangler, John Allee, William Allee, William Branh
1 CONC am and George Rogers, all who had homes there by 1836. The following ye
1 CONC ar the population was increased by the arrival of Jonathan Branham, Alv
1 CONC in Beaman, James Beaman, Thomas Helm, W.P. Cook, Arabian Davis, Wyatt Co
1 CONC ok and others. There were others who made land entries there but were n
1 CONC ot identified as residents of the township: James Dill, William Lafuse, We

1 CONT The earliest improvements of any note were the little corn mill erect
1 CONC ed by Issac Teel at the lower falls of Eel River. This was a small log bui
1 CONC lding situated on the edge of a cliff; it ground both corn and wheat and d
1 CONC id a good business for about ten years.

1 CONT T.C. Jennings operated the second mill located at the Upper Falls of Eel R
1 CONC iver. Mr Jennings being public spirited planned several other ventures con
1 CONC nected with the mill, however, none of them were successful. This mill w
1 CONC as passed through several different hands through the years, those bein
1 CONC g: Clune & Co, Messers. Foster and Fullerton, Messers. Steiner and Walla
1 CONC ce and a Mr. Taylor.

1 CONT In an early day, James Townsend of Putnam County and founder of the villa
1 CONC ge of Putnamville, conceived the idea of erecting a large factory at the l
1 CONC ower falls and spent much money cutting a raceway through the sold rocks t
1 CONC here. The project was abandoned eventually leaving Mr Townsend almost bank
1 CONC rupt. He also spent much time in mining salt and lead from the bluffs of t
1 CONC he river, this also proving futile.

1 CONT Matthias Spangler and James Beaman were the first to erect frame hous
1 CONC es in the township. Owen Martin and John Black built frame residenc
1 CONC es in an early day also. On the farm of James Beaman is one of the earlie
1 CONC st orchards.

1 CONT The first burial place in the township was near the lower falls of Eel Riv
1 CONC er where Issac Teel was laid to rest about 1821 or 1822. Several others we
1 CONC re buried there also, however, the land was later abandoned and no si

1 CONT A cemetery was laid of about near the upper falls many years later. Amo

1 CONT Fallsboro--This paper city was laid out in the year 1830 by Rose and Acr
1 CONC es in Section 26, township 12 north and Range 4 west and received its na
1 CONC me from the falls of the Eel River. The plat shows thirty five lots each 6
1 CONC 6x99 feet in size and four streets; Main, Jackson, Van Buren and Washingto
1 CONC n. The first of which was 60 feet and the others were 30 feet each. The to
1 CONC wn was platted for the purposes of speculation, but the proprieters nev
1 CONC er realized their anticipated fortune and dispossed of the site.

1 CONT Cataract--This village takes its name from the fall of the river and was o
1 CONC nce the milling and mercantile center for a large area of the country befo
1 CONC re the days of the railway. It is located in Section 2, Township 11 nor
1 CONC th and range 4 west and dates its history from December of 1851, at whi
1 CONC ch time the plat was surveyed and placed upon record. The original surv
1 CONC ey consisted of fourteen lots, but since then two additions have been ma
1 CONC de by T.C. Jennings on the first of March 1860 and the second on the seco
1 CONC nd of September 1863.

1 CONT The large flouring and saw mill of T.C. Jennings early gave the place cons
1 CONC iderable importance and induced many persons to secure lots and sett
1 CONC le in the village. A carding machine was one of the first industries of t
1 CONC he place operated by Mr. Jennings in connection with the other mills a
1 CONC nd a store was brought to the village soon after it was laid out.The mil
1 CONC ls were all operated on an extensive scale, Gosport and Greencastle bei
1 CONC ng the principal markets for lumber, while flour was hauled to Louisvil
1 CONC le and other distant points. One of the first buildings in the village w
1 CONC as erected for a business house by A.M. Bullett, it was occupied in an ear
1 CONC ly day by Clune & Co. of Cincinnati who stocked it with miscellaneous merc
1 CONC handise. They were in business about ten years. Other merchants who sold g
1 CONC oods were: Creech & Campbell, A.M. Hodge, Jack Lewis, L.T. Gose a
1 CONC nd T. D. Stillwell. There was also a drug store, and a wagon and blacksmi
1 CONC th shop.

1 CONT As I have mentioned before, James Carrell was NOT born in Ireland nor w
1 CONC as he an immigrant.  He was also NOT the son of (probably fictional) coup
1 CONC le Duncan McCarrell and Isabella Dallas.  For years, I and other researche
1 CONC rs thought that James was the son of William Carrell (d. 1811) of Johnst
1 CONC on County, NC and later Columbia County, GA by his first wife Ann.  Willia
1 CONC m's 1809 will named both sons James and William.  However, resear
1 CONC ch in GA records has revealed that William's sons James and William actual
1 CONC ly did settle in Columbia County, GA with their father William, and can n
1 CONC ot be identical with our ancestor James Carrell and his known brother Will
1 CONC iam Carrell (md. Sarah Stephenson, 2md. Piety Fluellin).  James' Revolutio
1 CONC nary War Pension Application states that he lived in Cumberland (now Harne
1 CONC tt) County, NC before the war.  There was a James Carrell who died in Cumb
1 CONC erland (Harnett) County, NC in 1778.  He did not leave a will, but his est
1 CONC ate papers show that Abraham Perry was his administrator.  Abraham Perry l
1 CONC ater served as a bondsman when William Carrell married his second wife Pie
1 CONC ty Fluellin in 1797 in Johnston County.  The estate papers of James Carre
1 CONC ll do not indicate whether he had a wife or any children.  However, Denn
1 CONC is Carrell, a likely brother of James and William, applied for a Revolutio
1 CONC nary War Pension in Shelby County, AL.  He stated that he was born in 17
1 CONC 66 in Wake County (not formed until 1771) and that he had brothers who h
1 CONC ad also served in the war. 
1 CONT Dennis is the only other Carrell who lived in the area of Pleasant Grove T
1 CONC ownship in the 1790s period besides James and William.  He left Johnston C
1 CONC ounty and migrated to Buncombe County, NC, and then Tennessee and later Sh
1 CONC elby County,  Alabama.  In Buncombe County, NC, there is a deed in 1815 wh
1 CONC ere Dennis Carrell had conveyed land to his step-father Abraham Perry, sug
1 CONC gesting that Perry might have married James Carrell (d. 1778)'s widow.

1 CONT All of the Carrell family descends from John Carrell, who acquired la
1 CONC nd on Swift Creek in Johnston County as early as 1752.  He died someti
1 CONC me in 1762, and in 1763, Elizabeth Johnson, widow of Sill Johnson, assum
1 CONC ed guardianship of his minor children.  Elizabeth was likely a Carrell her
1 CONC self, possibly John's younger sister or elder daughter.  John's orphans we
1 CONC re William, John, Lucy, Susannah, and Benjamin.  Court records later sh
1 CONC ow that another possible child of John was Absalom, a "base born (i.e. pos
1 CONC thumous) child."  William apparently came of age right around 1763 as he h
1 CONC ad a land transaction shortly after being placed under guardianship in 176
1 CONC 3.  In the 1750s, John Carrell had had a land transaction with James Carre
1 CONC ll.  James Carrell later was appointed guardian to John's daughter Lucy Ca
1 CONC rrell.  In a later transaction involving James Carrell in Cumberland Count
1 CONC y, Lucy Carrell served as a witness.  This seems to prove that James Carre
1 CONC ll moved from Johnston County to Cumberland County.  There are two possibi
1 CONC lities.  One is that Lucy was a younger sister of James, who became her gu
1 CONC ardian; or James was a possible relative of John Carrell and married John
1 CONC 's daughter Lucy.  Either way, it is likely that James Carrell (d. 177
1 CONC 8) of Cumberland (Harnett) County was either the son or son-in-law of Jo
1 CONC hn Carrell (d. 1762) of Johnston County.  Based on the evidence, it see
1 CONC ms likely that our ancestor James Carrell (1765-1834) and his brother Will
1 CONC iam and likely brother Dennis were children of James Carrell (d. 177
1 CONC 8) of Cumberland County, and that after their father's death, their moth
1 CONC er (maybe Lucy or some other woman) married Abraham Perry.
