What a “Novel” Idea!

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

Not to diminish the efforts of SilverBlue in any way whatsoever, but I am writing a book as well. My book, however, is fiction and will in no way be a photographic ensemble suitable for coffee tables everywhere so, rest easy my friend. :D

My novel is set in rural Harnett County, North Carolina in the early 1900′s and centers on the musings of a 6 year old boy called “Tink” (no relation, either real or intended, to Tink of the Blogosphere). The title, “When Skeltons Rattle”, refers to Tink’s interpretation of the old adage about having skeltons in one’s closet. As you can imagine, a 6 year old’s mind can do some wild things with such an idea.

Tink’s real name is Thomas Henry Parrish and he is the younger brother of Jasper and Allie Mae. Aside from his dog, Samson, his best friend is a raggedy old man known only as Ol’ Harley. Tink and Ol’ Harley spend a lot of their time either playing checkers at John Allen Campbell’s store down at the crossroads or fishing at their favorite spot in the woods below Carson Stewart’s hog farm.

Things in Tink’s world start changing in a big way when a not so likeable fellow from the other side of Oxford comes to the area. Mr. Alonzo Jackson Barefoot (emphasis on the “A”) has a hateful attitude, demands to be addressed by his full name (a demand not often met), and ends up becoming Tink’s brother-in-law by way of a “shotgun wedding” orchestrated by Tink’s Papa.

Want to find out more? I’ll let you know when the book is finished and ready to go. Who knows…maybe I’ll even give you a peek at it every now and then.
