A friend and I were taking a subway train one afternoon while we were visiting London seven years ago. The train stopped in the tunnel for about 10-15 minutes due to some construction on the tracks ahead. During the entire time, no one on the train spoke a word. No chatting, no whispering, no coughing, no sneezing, no moving around, nothing. Except for some distant construction noise on the tracks ahead, there was utter silence for at least 10-15 minutes! Even the car conductor never came on the intercom to make an announcement about the delay. It was the most deafening silence I've ever experienced. My friend and I were looking at each other puzzled, wondering why no one was making noise of any kind. We were too afraid to speak or make any noise ourselves for fear we'd be stared out by others in our car. It was a truly surreal experience.
