So Hard

Yesterday was probably the hardest day of my career, by far. We buried Jarrod. He is the third of my brothers in blue to be killed in the line of duty in my 24 years with the Chesapeake Police Department. His death has hit me particularly hard. I am sad, to be sure, but I am also very, very angry. I’m dealing with it…day by day.

I wanted to share a few photos of the day with you from our local paper. These shots were taken by Chris Tyree and Stephen M. Katz for the Virginian Pilot. Our Department Photographer is working on a memorial presentation which I will share with you when it is finished.

One shot that isn’t here that touched my heart so deeply was what we saw as the procession passed by one of our local primary schools. The entire student body was standing outside of the school holding little flags with their little hands over their hearts as we passed by. That is a memory I will carry with me always.

We stand one less
But no less strong
Our thin blue line
Will carry on
